The wonderful, vivid green, emerald is the birthstone for those born in the sweet month of May.
This rich stone is one of the worlds precious gemstones and were referred to as a holy gemstone by the Incas and the Aztecs. The Romans also held this stone in high regard as they associated Emeralds with Venus - the goddess of love and beauty. Cleopatra is perhaps the most famous historical figure to cherish emerald gemstones. She even claimed ownership of all emerald mines in Egypt during her reign. On the other side of the world, the Muzo Indians of Colombia had well-hidden and prized emerald mines.
